The Making of the First Drop
Three months, a lot of sampling, and one idea that refused to stay in my head.
It started with something I wanted to wear.
When I first thought about starting my own fashion brand, I came across a silhouette that made me think: I would actually wear that.
Around the same time, I was researching what women wanted from clothing, particularly women who struggled to find pieces that worked for their bodies. I wanted to think about inclusivity from the beginning, not create a design first and try to adapt it later.
One thing kept coming up: women wanted to wear tube tops, tanks and outfits they loved, but sometimes wanted a little more coverage around their arms or other parts of their bodies.
That got me thinking about a layer that could offer coverage without hiding the outfit underneath. Something sheer, light and easy to wear. Not another piece that dictated how you should dress, but one that gave you options.
Getting it out of my head was another story.
The first sample wasn’t what I’d imagined. So I went back to the drawing board.
I was particular about three things: the colour, the finish and the fall. I wanted the black to be deep, the white to be crisp, and the fabric to feel premium. Most importantly, it had to be soft and flowy, moving with you rather than sitting stiffly around you.
Finding the right fabric was only one part of it. I changed manufacturing units, revisited the design and spent around a month and a half getting the sampling right. The colours weren’t coming out as crisp as I wanted, and the drape still needed work.
The final version took about three months to come together. Longer than I’d planned, but getting the fabric and finish right mattered more than rushing it out.
Made for actual bodies. Not just a size chart.
I also wanted the fit to work beyond a mannequin or a single model. So I tried the coat on real bodies before finalising it.
Because it’s an outer layer, it needs room to breathe. That relaxed fit also gave us a way to make three considered size ranges work for our first drop:
- Size 1: Small–Medium
- Size 2: Large–XL
- Size 3: 2XL–3XL
As a small brand, we couldn’t offer every possible size from day one. But we could start by making a piece designed to accommodate different bodies, with the ease and movement an outer layer should have.
And then, summer happened.
The original plan was to have the coat ready for peak summer. The process had other plans, and the first drop is arriving later than expected.
But the idea was never limited to one outfit or one season. Wear it over a tube top, throw it on with denim, layer it over Indianwear, or use it when you want a little coverage without reaching for something opaque.
That’s what I wanted this first piece to do: give you another way to wear what you already love.
Three months later, it’s finally here.
The first drop. One layer. Many ways. You choose.
